The
Layers
of Yourself
Understand how you became you.
A framework for reading the system behind your behavior — how it shaped you, how your system adapted, and how you can begin to return to your whole self.
People aren't broken.
They're in different states.
Layers of Yourself is a clinical lens for reading what's organizing your client's experience right now, so you can address the actual state in front of you — not a generality.
One integrated system.
Six ways it expresses itself.
All six layers are always online — activating together, shifting in real time in response to how safe a person feels. Fluency in reading them is the practitioner skill.
-
01
EssenceWho you are at your steadiest. The signature underneath everything.
-
02
WoundsThe places where adaptation became a strategy. Not identity — imprint.
-
03
ProtestThe intelligent refusal. Where the system says not this — often before words.
-
04
ShadowWhat had to be hidden so the system could stay coherent. Disowned, not absent.
-
05
FearThreat-detection. Faster than thought, slower to update.
-
06
MaskThe presented self. A real adaptive function — not a lie, a translation.
Not a competing model. A lens that works with the modalities you know.
LYs doesn't ask you to abandon your training. It organizes what you're already doing around a single orienting question — what state is the client in right now?
IFS
Parts work gains a system-level orienting frame. LYs reads the field around a part — what state it serves, what it's protecting — so interventions land in context.
Somatic / Polyvagal
Bottom-up regulation gets a top-down map. The body is the instrument; LYs is the score. Both have to be read at once for a session to actually change something.
Layers of Yourself
A precise vocabulary for what's organizing a moment. Not a method. A way of seeing that makes whichever method you use sharper, more timely, and more attuned.
Barry Walker
Barry Walker is a psychotherapist and creator of Layers of Yourself, a framework for understanding how adaptation shapes human history and the lived system. His work draws on decades of clinical observation to help people recognize adaptive patterns and create more meaningful change.

"Barry has documented the structures we've been pointing at from different angles for years. This is the synthesis the field has been waiting for."
Bessel van der Kolk, M.D.
Author, The Body Keeps the Score
"It clarifies how things move together — and why a client who looks coherent on the outside can be in three different states simultaneously inside. That's the work."
Gabor Maté, M.D.
Author, The Myth of Normal
"I haven't seen a framework that holds the dual map — physiological and narrative — this cleanly. It's how I now think about regulation."
Dan Siegel, M.D.
Mindsight Institute
"A taxonomy that doesn't flatten the territory. That's rare. They've earned every endorsement they have."
Stephen Porges, Ph.D.
Polyvagal Theory
Three paths into the work.
Designed for licensed therapists, credentialed coaches, and guides already working in psychedelic-assisted, somatic, or depth-oriented modalities.
